Kate Shlugman

For the past 20 years, I have trained and worked as a professional actor. I have learned from some of the finest teachers, directors and practitioners in the industry, performed on some of the country’s most prestigious stages, and built a career in one of the most competitive and unforgiving professions in the world. What I didn’t anticipate was that all those years of rigorous training would give me far more than the ability to craft a compelling performance. They gave me a set of core communication and leadership skills that translate directly into the workplace:

  • Resilience and adaptability: the ability to absorb setbacks, learn from them quickly and keep moving, without being derailed by criticism or distracted by comparison with others.

  • Presence and persuasive communication: the vocal command and storytelling skill to hold a room, deliver a message with impact and stay composed in high-pressure situations such as pitches, presentations and difficult meetings.

  • Emotional intelligence and rapport: the capacity to connect with people quickly, build trust and understand other perspectives, which is essential for collaboration, negotiation and client relationships.

  • Self-awareness and executive presence: the confidence to lead with authority and authenticity, even when operating outside your comfort zone.

These capabilities underpin confidence, and confidence underpins performance. They are not innate talents. They can be learned, practised and refined, and developing them across your teams can strengthen collaboration, improve leadership effectiveness, boost engagement and drive stronger business results.

““Kate is a fantastic coach. With some coaches you just get information; but with Kate, you get transformation””
